Ulla Deventer
Born in 1984 in Henstedt-Ulzburg, lives in Hamburg
"Ulla Deventer started off her photographic practice as an assistant to fashion photographer Iris Brosch in Paris in 2005. She studied Visual Communication at Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts de Lyon and at Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg until 2012. In 2014 she graduated with a Master in photography from the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen. Ulla Deventer has since worked as an independent photographer and is continuously developing her artistic work with long term projects on photography, the human, and society. She uses portraiture to translate personal stories of groups of people, for example, prostitutes, we, as a society, have an ambivalent relationship with. While there’s demand for what they do, we tend to treat them as if they do not exist. Ulla Deventer tries to reflect the role of the people in that specific line of work by showing the individuals she encounters in her field trips as human beings. Each person has a different story to tell, about herself, her environment, her life and her dreams. The works of Ulla Deventer are explorations of the individuality of each person she connects by immersing herself into their lives and her stories."
